Do personal security cameras at home work?

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Question by Paladin_Slayer: Do personal security cameras at home work?
Neighbors are talking about installing personal security cameras at their single family residences. Is that practical? The average video tape is no more than 6 hours.

Is there a way to continuously save all footage digitally on a 100GB hard drive for long vacations? But that also means computers must be left on the entire time so the electricity bill must run the computer, camera, and any other peripheral continuously on long vacations. If the power goes out briefly, then it’s

This question assumes the camera is not aimed at other neighbor’s homes so no privacy issues are violated.

What are good security cameras for home use?

If you are concerned with what is happening around you, and it’s not just living in a bad neighborhood, I would not be so quick to dismiss the idea of a monitored alarm system – with cameras. You significantly reduce the odds of a break-in with a monitored system (three time more likely without one), and a good system can also monitor for fire, carbon monoxide, low temperature, even water – in other words, not just intrusion. There is also the issue of interactive services, and video is just one. The best systems today have the following:

1) 100% cellular monitoring
2) Remote arm/disarm capability
3) Special apps for iPhone, Blackberry, Android,
4) Email & text notifications on anything happening at home: doors opening, etc.
5) Video services – live viewing from any web connection (including phone) and motion-activated clips
6) Smart home – remote light and thermostat control

These days you can get wireless cameras that are integrated with alarm systems (monitoring for intrusion, fire, and other conditions) and some of these systems are really smart. As for the cameras themselves, here are some issues to consider:

- Indoor cameras usually cost less, require some light, and are more likely to be wireless. These are often pointed out a window.
- Outdoor cameras cost more, are more likely to be full infra-red for no light, and are usually hard wired (and therefore probably tougher to install)

Also , if you want full recording, then you need some kind of storage. If that is not required, there are some cameras that just send the image over your broadband connection – even to your cell phone – with no software required, and your computer does not have to be on. The smart cameras are the ones that only record a clip when they are activated by motion. Lots of people point the indoor cameras out their windows, and have motion-activated lights around the property for security – then a smart camera (even low-light) will sense the motion and capture a video clip. And with some cameras, you can program areas to ignore motion, and even certain times of day to ignore all motion and not create any clips.

Anyway, lots of options for cameras these days – good luck!

Q&A: Is it illegal to have security cameras that monitor a restaurant in your home?

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Question by Joe R: Is it illegal to have security cameras that monitor a restaurant in your home?
I have been working at a breakfast restaurant for the past month, and I have recently discovered that the owner of the restaurant has security cameras in her own home that monitor the restaurant. I have heard this is illegal but I am unsure, can anybody confirm if it is illegal or not? Thank you.

The cameras would have to be in the restaurant. It is impossible for the camera in the house to take pictures at another location. Did you mean to say the monitor?

The monitor can be in the owner’s home, to review off-site.
